The 27 EU Member States contain 494 million citizen.
The 10 new countries who became EU members from 1st May 2004 have 75 million people combined, of which Poland has 39 million.
Romania and Bulgaria contributed with respectively 22 and 8 million.
Today, there are 6.1 billion people on Earth. This is expected to increase to 9.3 billion by 2050.
