Associated members and partners of WEU

The Western European Union (WEU) was a defence alliance. Only EU members could be full members. NATO countries outside the EU could be associated members. So were Norway, Iceland and Turkey.

Denmark had observer status with the WEU together with Sweden, Austria, Finland and Ireland. The ten applicant countries from Eastern and Central Europe were associated partners in the WEU. As associated partners could participate in the WEU meetings.

This defence alliance is now being practically dissolved in favour of the EU itself running a military force directly.
