Professional sport is regulated by the treaties as an economic activity according to the Bosman case. The EU funds sporting activities and promotion of the EU during sports events, and also runs a support project, Eurathlon.
Notes
The EU decided to make 2004 the European Year of Education through Sport.
Future
The Lisbon Treaty suggests that sport should be covered by the area of supporting, coordinating or complementary action – the EU therefore “may take co-ordinating, complementary, or supporting action” (Art. 6e TFEU and 165 TFEU). This would make it possible to make a common sport policy or create a common EU-team for the Olympics. But the EU would not be allowed to harmonise the sport policies of member states.
