The Lisbon Treaty has a new special article for neighbourhood agreements in Art. 8 TEU. It could be offered for Turkey instead of a the full membership now under negotiations.
Partnership agreements and co-operation agreements are considered to be extended common trade agreements.
- Europe agreements has been designed for countries likely to become future members of the EU.
- Association agreements are signed with those countries that have no immediate prospect of becoming EU members.
Europe and Association agreements need the assent of the European Parliament.
