In 1995, the EU Court decided (Bosman case) that professional football constituted an economic activity as defined under the EU treaties and was therefore subject to EU laws governing the free movement of workers.
The future
The Lisbon Treaty proposes that sport should be an area supporting action (new Art. 6(e) TFU), where the EU can make legally binding desicions without harmonising national laws.
