European army

The "Pleven plan" for a European defence Community and a European Army was proposed in 1950, but collapsed when it failed to get a majority in the French National Assembly. In 2008 the French President Nicolas Sarkozy and the German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier have proposed a European army.

The Lisbon Treaty from 2009 includess a legal base for the establishment of an European army by unanimity and a structured cooperation for fewer member states.
