Rompuy, Herman Van (1947 - )
A special summit in Brussels 19 December 2009 appointed the Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy as permanent President of the European Council for 2 ½ year. He was later re-appointed until 2014.
The British long life peer, Catherine Ashton, former head of the House of Lords in the United Kingdom was appointed to the job as "foreign minister" in the same special summit.
