EUR-Lex

EUR-Lex is a database of all of the legal texts of the European Union, and provides free direct access to these documents. Through EUR-Lex it is possible to consult the Official Journal of the EU (since 1998) and it includes the treaties, legislation, case-law and legislative proposals, and the most recent proposals and communications from the European Union.

In April 2014, there were 32.861 EU laws, among them 12,204 Decisions, 9,038 Regulations, 4,348 decisions without addressee, 1790 directives and 1619 implementing regulations.

Five years before in 2009, around 26,500 legal acts were registered in the “Directory of Community legislation in force”. This figure included amendments, which one needs to read to understand the full Acquis. In 2009 there were around 26,500 legal acts registered in the “Directory of Community legislation in force”. This figure include amendments which one needs to read to understand the full acquis communautaire.

The Directory also gives data under 20 different headings. They do not include amendments. The total number of legal acts  here is 17, 000. Some acts are registered under more than one heading. The net number of different legal acts may be around 11,000.

The Commission has given the number of valid directives, regulations and decisions as 10,785 in a letter of 15 May 2009. Not included in these numbers are the legal acts modifying existing legislation. The number of these are 10,014.

The Acquis Commaunautaire is translated into the following 24 languages: Bulgarian, Czech, Croatian, Danish, German, Greek, English, Spanish, Estonian, Finnish, French, Hungarian, Italian, Lithuanian, Latvian, Maltese, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovene and Swedish. Irish (Gaelic) translations are not fully available.
