Common Transport Policy

Transport policy is now a shared competence between member states and the EU under the Lisbon Treaty. EU rules have then primacy over national rules if there is a conflict.

The founding Treaty of Rome foresaw a common transport policy, but this has only partially been adopted. The Court in Luxembourg has used the general principles in the Treaty to establish free competition in parts of the transport area. In recent years we have finally seen directives for different types of transport, for example roads and railways.

In February 2003 the European Parliament made a broad decision on transport policy.
