Beside the judges, the EU Court in Luxembourg has eight advocate generals who assist in preparing judgements. They prepare court cases with written opinions, which are not binding upon the Court, but usually influence its decisions.

The number of advocates generals can be extended by a unanimous decision in the Council. See Art. 252 TFEU in the Lisbon Treaty.
