Slovakian commissioner in the frist Barroso Commission from 2004-2009.
Figel was rsponsable for Education, Training, Culture and Youth. Jan Figel graduated at the Technical University in Kosice, Slovakia as an electrical engineer. Later he attended courses on international affairs at Georgetown University, Washington and UFSIA Antwerp.
Between 1992-98 he was and since 2002 he is a parliamentarian from the Christian-Democrat party that is involved in the ruling coalition. He has a four-year experience as State secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and he was Bratislava's chief negotiator with the European Union.
