Slovakia has a population of 5.41 million and an area of 40,035 km2.
Became an EU member state on 1 May 2004. At the referendum on EU membership on 16/17 May 2003 92.4 per cent of the voters supported their country joining the EU. Has had a Europe Agreement since 1995 and entered into Accession Partnership in 1998.
Slovakia has 7 out of 345 votes in the Council, and 13 out of 736 seats in the European Parliament.
From 1 November 2014 the Lisbon Treaty will reduce the Slovak share of the vote in the Council of Ministers from 2% today to 1.08%.
Notes
Slovakia became an independent state in 1993 when Czechoslovakia was divided into two parts.
