The term a 'common position' is used in three different senses in the EU.
- Under the co-decision procedure, the term is used to cover the Council position on proposals for amendments from the European Parliament. See Art. 294 TFEU, previously Art. 251 TEC. Now the Treaty only talks of positions under the new Ordinary Legislative Procedure.
- Under the EMU rules a common position may be adopted acoording to Art. 138 TFEU.
