United States of Europe
The "father" of the EU, Jean Monnet, headed an Action Committee for the United States of Europe.
In the Convention on the Future of Europe, Giscard d'Estaing suggested four names for the EU: "The European Union", "The European Community", "The United States of Europe" or "United Europe".
Giscard favoured "United Europe". The Convention chose to stick with "the European Union". The Lisbon Treaty now introduces the name "the Union" in Art. 1 TEU.
