Tobacco directive

The EU supports tobacco production under the Common Agricultural Policy with around 1 billion Euro - and the fight against cancer with around 2 million Euro - per year.

The EU has adopted directives against advertising tobacco. One directive was outlawed by the EU Court as being outside the EU’s power (competence). In 2002, the Commission submitted a new proposal on this. Since 2004 it has been required by the regulations to put on a warning sign on the cigarette box. Since 2005 it has not been allowed to advertise for tobacco.
