Schuman, Robert (1886 - 1963)

French Foreign Minister who proposed the "Schuman Plan" - a Coal and Steel Community - in a speech on 9th May 1950.

The speech is regarded as the founding of the EU. The 9th May has been named "Europe Day" and the EU Constitution proposes this day as a European national day.

Regarded as one of the founding fathers of the EU, along with the Frenchman Monnet, the Italian De Gasperi, the German Adenauer, and the Belgian Spaak.
