Has a population of 21.61 million and an area of 235,500 km2.
Romania became member of the EU on the 1st of January 2007 together with Bulgaria. Before this date, the country had a Europe Agreement since 1995 and an Accession Partnership from 1998.
The Lisbon Treaty proposes a distribution of seats in the EU Parliament based on the principle of "degressive proportionality". This will give Romania 33 out of 751 seats after 2009.
