Portugal has a population of 10.57 million and an area of 92,000 km². It joined the EU in 1986.

After enlargement in 2004, it has 12 votes out of 345 in the Council and 24 seats out of 785 in the EU Parliament.

For Portugal, the Lisbon Treaty foresees 22 seats in the European Parliament (24 seats today) and a weight of 2.14 % (Portugal´s EU population) of its votes in the Council (as against 3.48 % today).
