With an area of over 312,000 km2 and a population of 38.16 million, Poland is by far the largest country of those which joined the EU on 1st May 2004.
It had a Europe Agreement since 1994, when it also applied for membership.
Now it has 27 votes out of 345 in the Council and 54 members in the EU Parliament, like Spain.
The EU Constitution proposes a distribution of seats in the EU Parliament based on the principle of "degressive proportionality". This will give Poland 51 out of 751 seats after 2009.
