Nuclear weapons

France and the UK possess nuclear weapons. They are not under the control of the EU, but the European Council can give the EU 'competence in this area if the move receives unanimous support.

Notes

• In 1995, the French President Jacques Chirac was met with protests in the EU Parliament because France had been testing nuclear bombs in Polynesia and the South Pacific.
