President of France (2000-2007), hosted the record five-day summit in Nice that established the Treaty of Nice in December 2000. Lost referendum on the proposed EU Constitution on 29 May 2005.
Chirac did not stand as a candidate in the Presidential elections of May 2007 when Nicolas Sarkozy was elected president.
