Lithuania has a population of 3.40 million and an area of 65,000 km2

It became an EU member state on 1st May 2004.

Membership was finally decided in a national referendum in which around 90% of the voters supported EU membership. Has had a Europe agreement since 1995 and entered into Accession Partnership in 1998.

Lithuania has 13 out of 785 seats in the EU Parliament and 7 out of 345 votes in the Council.

The Lisbon Treaty proposes a distribution of seats in the EU Parliament based on the principle of "degressive proportionality". This will give Lithuania 12 out of 751 seats after 2009.
