Kohl, Helmut (1930 - )

German Chancellor from 1982 to 98. He led Germany during its reunification after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
Kohl promoted the Treaty of Maastricht, in close co-operation with the French President Mitterand, in 1991.

Notes

• In 1998 an EU summit in Vienna made Kohl the "European citizen of honour".
• The only other recipient of that honour was  Jean Monnet in 1974.
