The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. Its seat is in Dutch capital, The Hague.

It began work in 1946, when it replaced the Permanent Court of International Justice. On the basis of international law the ICJ has to decide on legal disputes submitted to it by the member states of the UN.

EU member states are not permitted to raise internal disputes on EU issues in the International Court. All EU member states must accept the supremacy of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.

The International Court is composed of 15 judges of different nationalities.

Notes

- In 2002, the International Criminal Court was established by the UN.

- The USA has, thus far, refused to accept the authority of the ICC.
