The Treaty of Nice introduced qualified majority voting for supporting measures in the area of industrial policy to promote competitiveness in European industry.
Harmonisation of national laws is not permitted for industrial policy. Art. 157 TEC.
The future
The Lisbon Treaty proposes that industrial policy be a part of the area for supportive, co-ordinating or supplemental initiatives: See Art. 6 and 157 TFU as proposed by the revised EU Constitution.
