EPP Group
The Group of the European People's Party, Christian Democrats and European Democrats in the European Parliament.
The group is the largest in the European Parliament and a major force in the European Union. Previously the EPP/ED group consisted of members from both traditional Christian-democratic parties and British and Danish conservative parties who were previously organised in their own distinct group. ED stood for European Democrats.
The British conservatives declared in June 2006 that they would form an independent eurosceptic group after the European elections in 2009. This new group is called European Conservatives and Reformists, ECR.
The EPP embodies the tradition established in the 1950s by Robert Schuman, Konrad Adenauer and Alcide de Gasperi, of aiming for a federal Europe.
The group is chaired by Manfred Weber from the German CSU party from 2014. He succeeded Joseph Daul from the French UMP party. Daul took over in 2006 when the former German chairman, Hans-Gert Pöttering, CDU, became the President of the European Parliament.
