Infringement Proceedings 

The Commission initiated 1300 so-called infringement proceedings in 2013, sending a so-called letter of formal notice. It may be followed by legal action before the ECJ if the government fails to comply with the Commission's requirements. 

 

The Commission is called the "guardian of the Treaty" and try to ensure that member states comply with EU law.
