de Gaulle, Charles (1890 - 1970)
French President who forced the Luxembourg compromise. De Gaulle described the EU Commission as "bureaucrats without a fatherland".
De Gaulle wanted a system where governments cooperated whilst remaining separate, a "Europe of Nations", not for nations to merge together in a supra-national integration.
