Court of First Instance
Under the Single European Act of 1987, the EC Court in Luxembourg was provided with this additional lower court to deal with less important cases, many of them dealing with staff matters. The Court of First Instance, meets in different chambers. Appeals against verdicts on points of law may be made to the EU Court of Justice.
Notes
The Treaty of Nice provides further specialised EU courts.
The future
According to the Lisbon Treaty the Court of First Instance is renamed the "General Court". It also allows for a qualified majority of 55 per cent of the countries representing 65 per cent of the EU's citizens, to set up more specialised courts.
