Almunia, Joaquín (1948- )

Joaquín Almunia is a Spanish politician, the current Commissioner for Competition and a vice-president in the Barroso II Commission.

A member of the Spanish Socialist Worker's Party, he held several ministries between 1982 and 2000. In the first Barroso Commisison Joaquín Almunia was Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, having started his mandate in 2004.  He also served in the Prodi Commission between April and November 2004.
