President of the European Parliament from January 2012.
German member of the European Parliament, elected Chairperson of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament (S-D, previously PES/PSE) from July 2004 to January 2012. He was re-elected in July 2009 for the group now renamed the progressive alliance of socialists and democrats, S-D.
Hailing from the German Social Democratic Party (SPD). Mr Schulz was born in Hehlrath, Germany, on 20 December 1955.
The Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, referred to him as "KAPO" - a guard in a concentration camp.
