Balázs, Péter (1941- )

Hungarian Commissioner from May 2004 until the end of October 2004 during the Prodi commission. He is a former ambassador to Denmark and Germany and has a wealth of experience in EU affairs. His EU-connections began in 1982 when he was a commercial counsellor of the Hungarian Embassy in Brussels. Lately served as Hungary's minister for EU integration and just recently he was the head of the Hungarian EU Mission. He is a professor of economics who speaks fluent French, English and German, and he was the Hungarian government’s representative on the European Convention. Balázs, who is also the president of the Hungarian Equestrian Federation, shadowed the Regional Policy portfolio of Michel Barnier, until Barroso established the new Commission with László Kovács as Hungarian commissioner.
