CEN, CENELEC and ETSI
Standards organisations serve the EU and other European nations by providing common industrial and technical standards for products. In 2014 there were more than 55,000 such standards in the EU.
Standards are decided by a qualified majority according to the EU rules for the EU area.
If a standard is adopted it overrides national laws as a matter of supranational EU law and can only be amended by another qualified majority decision.
- CEN is the general organisation in Brussels, “Comité Europeéen de Normalisation”.
- CENELEC deals with electric articles.
- ETSI deals with electronic communications.
