British Prime Minister from 2007 - 2010 where he lost the elections to David Cameron, leader of the British Conservatives, and stepped down as leader of Labour to allow an alliance with the British Liberal Democrats.  Brown took over from Tony Blair and cancelled their promised referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.

Formerly British Chancellor of the Exchequer since the Labour election victory of 1997. Was seen as a major obstacle to British acceptance of the Euro: he insisted that five economic criterias be strictly fulfilled before any possible entrance.

The most recent public analysis was ambiguous as to exactly how many of these criteria have been fulfilled; some analysts suggested hat all but one of the tests have been met.
