A German town close to Belgium and the Netherlands. Capital of Charlemagne's empire in the 9th century. Charlemagne's tomb is located here. It inspires modern efforts towards European unity.

Notes

Every year in Aachen, a well-known European personality receives a prize, known as the Charlemagne prize,  for his/her work for European integration. In 2009 the prize went to Prof. Dr. Andrea Riccardi, the Italian historian who founded the Community of Sant’Egidio. 

In 2008, the prize went to the German chancellor Angela Merkel. In 2007, the prize went to Javier Solana.

Previous winners were: in 2006, Jean-Claude Juncker, in 2005, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, in 2004, the outgoing European Parliament President, Pat Cox, and in 2003, the former French President, Giscard d'Estaing.  

In 2002, the prize went to the EURO to the European Central Bank which is custodian of the EURO.  In 2001, the prize went to the Hungarian Writer and Sociologist György Konrád, and in 2000, to Bill Clinton, at the time, President of the United States of America.
