Whistleblowers

Term used to describe those civil servants who go public with information on wrongdoings or irregularities within the institution they work for.

On 15 March 1999, the Santer Commission stepped down after a civil servant, Paul van Buitenen, revealed that there had been severe mismanagement of EU funds.
