Schmidt, Helmut (1918 - )

The former German Social Democrat chancellor who replaced Willy Brand and worked closely with the French President Giscard d`Estaing. Schmidt and Giscard d'Estaing initiated the Economic and Monetary System as a forerunner of EMU and the single currency.
