Metrication
The shift from imperial British and American units of measurement to the continental European decimal units.
The EU has adopted common metric units of measurement, making their use binding under EU law. This led to popular protests in the UK and to a court case involving the so-called "metric martyrs". The martyrs defied EU-based laws that make it illegal to sell goods using traditional imperial weights and lengths.
The Barroso Commission has accepted the British measures.
