President of the powerful budget committee in the European Parliament since July 2009.
MEP and former rapporteur for the Constitutional Affairs Committee, for which he wrote a report on the division of competences which underlies the EU Constitution.
Lamassoure was a member of the Convention on the Future of Europe and was one of the leaders of a campaign advocating referenda on the new Constitution in all EU Member States, and also for having rules on direct democracy inscribed into the Constitution.
A Former French Minister for Europe, he has been a member of the European Parliament’s Christian Democrat Group (EPP) from 1989-93 and again since 1999. Elected for the French party, UMP.
