Greenland
Greenland has a population of 56,000 and has an area of 2,157,529 km2. It is a Danish territory joining the EU 1 January 1973 as a part of Denmark.
23 February 1982 there was a referendum in Greenland against continued membership, and Greenland withdraw from the EU 1 January 1985 after a unanimous decision in the Council.
Since 1985, it has had an OCT agreement with the EU.
Greenland has free access for all exports to the EU market, and vice versa. There is also a financial protocol, which fixes a yearly amount that is paid in return for EU fishing rights.
In the agreement for 2003, the finance provided by Greenland has been divided into two portions: one being the payment for fishing rights and the other a structural contribution.
With a view to replacing the Fisheries Agreement of 1985, the European Community, Denmark and Greenland have negotiated a new Fisheries Partnership Agreement for a period of six years beginning on 1 January 2007.
