Amato, Giuliano (1938 - )

Italian Prime Minister from 1983 to 1987 and from 2000 to 2001. Member of the Constitutional Court of the Italian Republic. A professor of comparative constitutional law and Minister of the Interior in the Prodi administration from 2006 to 2008. Amato is a strong supporter of federalism at the EU level.   

He was vice-President of the European Convention on the future of Europe and chaired the Convention working groups on the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Simplification.

He coordinated the European Social Democrats' efforts in the subsequent EU Convention as well.
