Albania
Albania has a population of approximately 3.6 million and an area of around 29,000 km².
It has had a Trade and Co-operation Agreement with the EU since 1992. The Stabilisation and Association Process started in 1999.
Albania applied for EU membership in April 2009 and was accepted as an EU applicant country in 2013 by the Commissiion and in 2014 by the Council of Ministers.
Together with the other Western Balkan countries, Albania was invited by the EU leaders and the EU Commission to apply for future membership of the EU. At the Thessaloniki Summit in June 2003, EU leaders were unequivocal that all Western Balkan countries would eventually join the EU.
