The EU co-operates over legal issues. AGIS is an abbreviation for the Framework programme on police and judicial co-operation in criminal matters between 2003 and 2007. It had a budget of 65 million Euro. The programme replaced Grotius II, Criminal, Oisin II, Stop II, Hippocrates and Falcone, which expired in 2002.
Although originally intended to run until 2007, AGIS ended a year early in 2006 so that it could be succeeded by new programmes in the area of internal security and criminal justice. These programmes are due to run over the period 2007-2013:
- Under the framework programme "Security and Safeguarding Liberties", the new specific programmes "Prevention, Preparedness and Consequence Management of Terrorism and Other Security-Related Risks" and "Prevention of and Fight Against Crime";
- Under the framework programme "Fundamental Rights and Justice", the new specific programme "Criminal Justice".
These programmes were adopted by the Council on 12 February 2007 and published on 24 February 2007 in the Official Journal of the European Union, N. L 58. Details of the funding opportunities available under them will be posted on the pages of the specific programmes.
