Equality
All member states are equal before the treaties according to Article 4.2 TEU in the Lisbon Treaty. Equality among citizens is a new constitutional principle in the Lisbon Treaty, see Article 9 TEU.
All EU citizens are equal before the law. This principle goes further than the principle of non-discrimination, which only forbids national discrimination.
In the Czech Republic, it was feared that the principle could be used to undermine the so-called Benes decrees.
