Has been appointed European Commissioner for Trade from Belgium for the Barroso II Commission.
Karel de Gucht is former Belgian foreign minister who was appointed Commissioner for development and humanitarian aid in July 2009 when the Belgian Commissioner Louis Michel was elected a Belgian MEP and joined the liberal group in the European Parliament.
Karel de Gucht is a former member of the European Parliament where he wrote a report on fundamental rights.
