KODA

A Danish organisation which collects royalties from music users for composers. The European Commission has accused KODA and the corresponding artists’ organisations in the other member states of having abused their monopoly. The penalty was a fine of 10% of turnover from 1 January 1973, when Denmark joined the EEC, i.e. in reality a confiscation of KODA’s assets.

In parallel with its confidential correspondence with these organisations, the Commission has issued a communication on the future organisation of collective music performing rights.

In 2007, the European Parliament decided to commission a report by Katalina Levai on music performing rights. Almost all members voted for the report asking the Commission to respect the rights of composers and authors.

Later the EU has decided a directive on the regulation of the music market.
