Salmonella
Salmonella is an infection, which often occurs in meat. In 2005, for example, 35,000 Danes became ill from salmonella. An estimated 20 died.
Ninety per cent of the most serious salmonella cases – resistant strains – are attributed either to imported meat or to meat eaten abroad.
In summer 2006, a majority in the Danish Parliament demanded that the Food Minister prohibited the import of meat infected with salmonella. The Minister at first hesitated but then presented a comprehensive plan for the eradication of salmonella, amongst other things by prohibiting the import of poultry with salmonella.
Sweden and Finland have bans on salmonella in imported meat.
