Community preference

Term used in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), meaning to favour products originating in the EU through common import levies and export refunds. Imposes extra costs on consumers and increased prices for farmland. Higher prices for agricultural products can normally be capitalised in the form of higher prices for farmland.

Notes

- This is one of the reasons behind agricultural reform and direct payments to the farmers, rather than price support for assisting their incomes.
