Bruges speech
The then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher made a speech in the Belgian town of Bruges in 1988 in which she criticised the supra-national ambitions of the EU and supported French President Charles de Gaulle's vision of a "Europe of Nations".

- A Bruges Group was founded in Britain to support her ideas.
- Many important political speeches are still delivered at the College of Europe in Bruges.
